Title: Gathering of Words: A Selection of Poems and Lyrics
Reviewed by: Joyce Jacobo
"There are those times you bring me pain but you will always be my friend."

This poetry collection showcases the works of a professional lyricist and horticulturist, drawing from many years of his life experiences. It brings together pieces published elsewhere with those showing up in print for the first time. Each poem flows with the musicality of a tune ready for the reader to sing them aloud, and many of the selections include repeated chorus sections. Additionally, personal travels, reflections on the state of the world, and historical accounts are prominent features in its contents, interspersed with several humorous pieces of such a domestic nature as navigating sofa cushions or the memories associated with certain types of furniture, in general. The changes felt in the passage of time, loneliness, and the need to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding world are also recurring themes.

In many ways, this wide array of pieces feels like enjoying a travel book shared through poetry rather than prose. There are so many rich, vibrant details in the destinations portrayed that draw the reader in as much as the clear rhythm embedded in each line. And given the occupation of its author, it would not be a surprise to find an album where all the poems printed in this specific collection had been put to music. They set themselves up nicely as if in preparation for that kind of endeavor. The thoughtfulness depicted in moments such as pointing out the sense of loss felt by those revisiting places after a great lapse of time to the lasting memory of sweetness created by a seemingly simple kiss brings great depth to this collection. As such, it becomes a wonderful read for anyone fond of poetry and music.

Title: Gathering of Words: A Selection of Poems and Lyrics
Review completed: May 2023
A diverse collection of poetry by debut author Peter Sheardy Gathering of Words is a collection of seventy-six poems and lyrics by Peter Sheardy. Sheardy wrote his first memorable poem as a sophomore in high school, inspired by song lyrics. He began to write more seriously in college. He has lived in many states and travelled extensively. In this collection, Sheardy shares his favourite poems and lyrics, inspired by his travels and music.
This is a diverse collection of poetry, with many varied themes, including travel and adventure, the changing seasons, love and war, the old and the new world, good times and dark times, and much more. The collection includes, Barracuda Pete, a lyrical sea shanty; Pere Lachaise, a tribute to famous artists buried in a cemetery in Paris; and Isle of Plastic, which explores the devastating impact of plastic on the natural environment.
As a huge fan of poetry, I was delighted to read Gathering of Words: A Selection of Poems and Lyrics by Peter Sheardy. The collection provides a unique insight into Sheardy’s personal journey through life. Sheardy has a range of poetic styles and uses different forms and structures to keep readers engaged. The poems have a beautiful, conversational and lyrical quality, and I enjoyed many of them, particularly the dark and haunting, Battle of the Palms:
And men pray loudly on bended knees
While others hang from bended trees.
Leaves are singed from fiery pleas,
But the palms still sway in the gentle breeze.
This is a wonderful, eclectic book of poetry for readers who enjoy short, whimsical poems loaded with vivid imagery and humour.
